Search and filter capabilities have been greatly enhanced in vMedia 2.3. The following steps examine your various options for narrowing your search results within the Search Results grid. This procedure assumes you have already performed a Viewing Module search. With that in mind, the procedure begins with the populated Search Results grid.

NOTE: Both the existing sort functionality and the new sort functionality operate on the base search results. However, sorting by grid column headings, and using the [Sort] button are mutually exclusive. Whichever method is used last, takes precedence.

  1. Right-click on a specific column header to open the Search and Filter Control for the selected column.
  2. The Search and Filter Control shows the available headers related to your original search.

Uncheck any header that you want to eliminate from the results grid.

NOTE: A column that is removed from the search results in this manner remains hidden for subsequent searches until restored, or when the Viewing Module is exited. Once the Viewing Module is exited, all column visibilities are reset to the configuration established for the database.

Place a checkmark next to a header for any column that should appear in the search results grid.

NOTE: Changes made to the column positions and column widths will be automatically saved under the logged in user's profile and will be restored and used in future searches by the user.

  • Resize Column Width
    • Resize column width by clicking on the dividing line that separates each column and dragging the line to the left or to the right.

NOTE: If you click [More...] (see previous graphic), an interface appears that allows you to edit the column positions or you can edit the selected column width.

  • Reposition and Resize Column Width
    • Highlight the desired column and click the [Up] or [Down] buttons to move the position of the column.
    • The column at the top of the list will appear on the far left of the grid and the the column at the bottom of the list will appear at the far right of the grid. In essence, the order of the list coincides with the column order.
    • Resize column width by selecting the desired column and then entering the [Width of selected column (in pixels):].
Click [Close] to save and exit.

  • Simple sorting can now be accomplished by clicking on the column header.

  • Reposition Columns

  1. Click on the [Search/Filter] magnifying glass to access additional filter options.

  1. There is a data entry box, and three function buttons on the first row; they are Search, Remove Filter, and Close. There is also a link into the Filter section which is the [Funnel More...] button located on the second row.
  2. Each of the [Search/Filter] options operate separately.
    • Search searches for values typed into the data entry box in the current column and makes the first (or next) matching row visible in the grid. If a filter is also in effect the search is performed within the filtered values.
    • Filter, which is reached by clicking on the [Funnel/More...] button, opens up a secondary dialog that provides an expression builder and a pick-list selector for filtering the grid to only display the matching results.

Search usage:

  1. Type a partial match in the data entry dialog, and then click the search/magnifying glass button to the right. Any containing match string will work.
  2. For example, the 111-22-3333 record is not shown in the grid initially. Right-click on the Debtor SSN column, type 111-22-3333 in the box, and click the [Search] icon. The grid will scroll such that the matching row will now be positioned on the grid below the search dialog.
  3. Pressing search again will find the next matching row, or display a completion dialog if no additional matches can be found.
  4. Exit search mode by either clicking on the [Exit] button or by clicking outside the search box. If a search was successful, the matching row will be selected upon exit.

Filter Usage:

  1. Right-click on the desired column. Leave the search data entry blank and click on the [Filter More...] button.
  2. The dialog extends to show the filter section below the search section.
  3. The filter is divided into two selection areas you can use to filter results
  • Area 1 is for typing in an expression to filter on.
  • Area 2 is for filtering by checking or un-checking boxes next to existing values for the column.

NOTE: Before or after your filtered results appear, you can add additional filtering to those results by right-clicking additional columns to string together filters.

  1. Area 1 usage: Type an expression: Example: filter values beginning with "TEST."
  2. Area 2 usage: Click on the desired values individually. Selected values will be included in the results. There are also two macro selections: Select all selects all values, and the Invert selection swaps checked/un-checked states for all values.

  1. Left-click to sort column and again to invert the sort.

  1. To remove a filter and go back to showing all rows, right-click on the desired column and click on the Clear filter icon.
  2. The tiny magnifying glass icon on the bottom-left corner opens the Grid Templates Filter & Sort feature to add or remove grid templates.

Additional Feature

One additional feature is that the Search/Filter dialog will go semi-transparent if the mouse is moved outside the dialog boundary without closing it. This can be useful to be able to see the current grid before a search or filter operation is saved.
